Qixi, also called Double Seventh Festival, is Chinese traditional festival. It is considered as Chinese Valentine’s Day now due to its beautiful love story.
Long, Long ago, there was a kind fellow named Niu Lang. His parents died when he was a child. Later he was driven out of his home by his sister-in-law. So he lived by himself herding cattle and farming with his own cattle. One day, he fell in love with a fairy named Zhi Nv. Zhi Nv came to the earth secretly and married him because it is against the rule in the heaven that fairies cannot marry human beings. They lived a happy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven soon found out the fact and ordered the Queen Mother to bring the Zhi Nv back. Niu Lang was heart-broken and don’t know how to bring his wife back. At that time, his cattle suddenly can speak. It told him that it would die soon and he can take away his hide making it as shoes after it dies. Niu Lang followed its words and went to the heaven with his son and daughter. At the time when he was about to catch up with his wife, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke. One billowy river appeared in front of Niu Lang. Niu Lang and Zhi Nv were separated on the two banks forever. Their loyalty to love touched magpies, so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for them to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month. Hence their meeting date has been called “Qixi” (Double Seventh).
Even though it is considered as Chinese Valentine’s Day now, but actually this festival is a traditional Doll Festival in China. Lots of girls who are unmarried will tie color cords on their wrists, embroider and hold a competition about their work.
